Support for criminalization of self-managed abortion (SMA): A national representative survey

January 2024 – People were less likely to agree that Self-Managed Abortions using abortion pills should be illegal than other forms of Self-Managed Abortions, although over one-fifth were unsure. People were less likely to agree Self-Managed Abortions using abortion pills should be criminalized than Self-Managed Abortions using other drugs, medications, herbs, alcohol or by using traumatic methods. In multivariable analyses, people assigned male at birth and who those who identified as Christian were associated with agreeing that Self-Managed Abortions using abortion pills should be illegal; people who identified as Hispanic/Latinx ethnicity and those who have experienced medical mistreatment were less likely to agree Self-Managed Abortions with medication abortion pills should be illegal. Public support for criminalizing SMA is complex and varied by SMA method and form of punishment.
